Introduction To CBD and The Endocannabinoid System
What is CBD?
CBD, short for cannabidiol, is a chemical compound from the hemp plant. It is a naturally occurring substance that's used in products like oils and edibles to impart a feeling of relaxation and balance. Unlike Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), it is not psychoactive.
CBD actually prevents your natural endocannabinoids from being broken down, therefore aiding your endocannabinoid system (ECS) in maintaining homeostasis. In numerous studies, CBD also has been shown to reduce anxiety and depression, ease nausea, and possess analgesic (i.e. pain relieving) properties.
Endocannabinoid System
Did you know that your body naturally produces endogenous cannabinoids similar to those found in Hemp? That’s right! These molecules make up the Endocannabinoid system (ECS) which plays a significant role in sleep, mood regulation, appetite, and memory. The ECS (Endocannabinoid system) has a major role in synchronizing the internal physiological processes that dictate our daily experience.
Experts believe that the primary function of the ECS is to maintain homeostasis, or balance, the stability of your body’s internal environment. Anxiety often creates an extreme disruption to the body’s internal stability, sending the ECS into overdrive. If left untreated, anxiety can cause a vast amount of physical side effects such as adrenal fatigue, sleep disturbances, cardiovascular disease and more.
“The brain is about a symphony, and CBD can bring the entire symphony into harmony.”
Extraction & Processing
CBD, also known as cannabidiol, is a chemical compound found in the Hemp plant. It is one of over on hundred special compounds located in the Hemp plant, referred to as cannabinoids. Currently, there are three main ways to extract CBD from Hemp.
C02 Method: This method involves using the gas C02 as a liquid solvent at certain temperatures and pressures to extract the CBD and cannabinoids from the Hemp plant. Best for trained professionals.
Ethanol Method: This method uses ethanol as a solvent to extract the CBD from the Hemp plant. Best for start small businesses to start with.
Olive Oil: This method is the most widely used because of the cost. Olive oil is used as a solvent as the Hemp plant is heated to specific temperatures to begin the process of decarboxylation (which activates the plants chemicals).
